How to Increase Employee Resilience

It seems that all parties have agreed that resilience will have a positive impact on employees. The question now is what can be done to increase employee resilience. The following seven ways might be a reference for company policy.

1. Gradual Workload
One of the things that support self-efficacy is when someone feels able to do something. This feeling is certainly not something that immediately falls at once, but is cultivated little by little. For this reason, companies need to provide workloads in stages, especially for new employees.

A gradual workload provides opportunities for new employees to feel more confident about their abilities. It also gives time for new employees to get used to the rhythm, culture, and workload of the company. Thus, employee resilience can be trained little by little so that eventually becomes a hill.

2. Holding an Outbound Workshop
Outbound is the best way to simulate conditions and challenges in a pleasant atmosphere. In outbound challenges, employees will be trained to remain calm despite pressure. Employees who show good performance in outbound challenges often show increased self-regulation skills.

This improvement in self-regulation capability is expected to carry over when the employee is faced with real work challenges. In a work environment full of challenges and pressures, employees will show their level of resilience. The more the employee is able to overcome the pressure that comes, the more mature and stronger the employee’s resilience.

3. Reward and Punishment Program
To control impulses from within does depend on the individual itself. However, that does not mean there is no way to influence it. The application of behavioral psychology methods can be done. One of them is by giving a reward and punishment program.

Even though the reward and punishment program is a form of encouragement from the outside, it does not mean that it does not affect employees internally. External impulses that force employees to do or not do something can imprint in the long run. Like fasting to practice patience, this program is also able to train employee resilience.

4. Education and Training
The speed of one’s adaptation ability and problem solving is often associated with IQ (Intelligence Question). Although these abilities are different, in its application, people who have faced the same problem are easier to solve. This indicates that education and training can have a significant impact.

To improve the analytical skills of employees, they need to get education and training. Certainly it would be better if the education and training were related to their field of work. Thus, this will develop the employee’s analytical skills to solve problems. Which, in the end, also increases the resilience of the employee.

5. Spiritual Guidance
What is the main key to optimism? Knowledge, huh? Skill, huh? Or support from others? Well, actually that’s not all. The main key to optimism is faith in God. This is where the source of positive hope comes from.

Unfortunately, many management experts do not take into account the element of spirituality. This is understandable considering that management is an attempt to regulate things that can be controlled. Meanwhile, spiritual seems too absurd to be understood and controlled.

Even so, the movement to include spiritual intelligence in management theory seems even greater. And, in fact, spirituality indeed occupies an important position for individuals, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, the company can provide spiritual guidance for employees on a regular basis so that employee optimism and resilience are maintained.

6. Empoyee Volunteering
It is to mobilize employees to participate in volunteer activities by sharing or helping the weaker ones. This activity can arouse empathy, soften hearts, and refine character. Feelings of gratitude can more easily grow because of this activity. Employees can hone empathy and resilience well.

7. Routine Employee Resilience Improvement Program
The increase in positive aspects is the impact of positive programs carried out in the long term. For this reason, consistency is needed in carrying out all the resilience programs discussed earlier. The company needs to provide budget and time for these programs to run regularly.
